On 1st February 2021, Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the yearly union budget of India for 2021-22. Following that budget, all public or government-owned transport will be scrapped and deregistered if they are older than 15 years.
This means that vehicles that are physically unfit for running needs to be taken down because of their contribution to air pollution.
But not just public transport, all private vehicles will also be scrapped and deregistered that are older than 20 years.
While addressing this change in the transportation industry, Nitin Gadkari also mentioned that he aims to improve the quality of vehicles running on the road. To implement this change, he plans to develop an automobile facility that will take care of older vehicle scrapping across the country.
Such checkpoints for the deregistration of 15 years old government and 20 years old private vehicles will be installed within every 150km. This will ensure smooth checking of vehicles and no chaos amongst people.
The policy was launched by Prime Minister Narender Modi early in 2021 and has been in effect since April 2022. According to the Prime minister, this policy will help India reduce its air pollution and promote a circular economy.
