In December 2024, the Maharashtra Transport Department introduced an SOP (Standard operating procedure). According to that, HSRP is now compulsory for vehicles that were purchased before April 2019 and are still plying the road. If the person does not affix the HRSP till the final date, they will be levied a fine according to the Motor Vehicle Act and Rule. The SOP stated the final date to take all in control is the end of March 2025.
The Maharashtra transport department is actively working on such issues. For people who do not have detailed knowledge about the HSRP and the process, here is all you need to know:
An HSRP or High-security registration plate is an electronically recorded metal license plate that connects to the vehicle. These are tamper-proof plates. The HSRP plate includes a unique identification number, the vehicle's registration number, and a hologram. The permanent identifying number is a ten-digit number imprinted with laser technology. These are the national standard and are attached with special non-reusable locks that break if the HSRP is removed, making remounting impossible.
As per the government of India, HSRP is essential for every vehicle sold after April 2019. The primary purpose of a High-Security Registration Plate is to reduce theft and vehicle-related crimes and improve vehicle security.
To get HSRP in Maharashtra, you can apply using both methods online or in person at the Maharashtra Regional Transport Office (RTO) or its official website. Submit all the details and documents related to your vehicle and pay the required fee. After completing the form, that person needs to book an appointment at a nearby vendor on a suitable date and time.
Vehicle and phone details must be the same as on the Vahan Portal. In case of any issue with the plates, the person can directly reach out to customer support.
Some standard documents are needed to complete the process of getting HSRP. Those documents are RC (vehicle registration certificate), valid identity proof, address proof, vehicle purchase invoice, insurance documents, and payment confirmation receipt. The mobile number used to book an appointment must be registered with the Vahan Account. The owner has to bring all the documents and receipt of payment at the appointment time.
As HSRP is now compulsory, people need to get it as soon as possible. As per the SOP, the charge to get HSRP for two-wheelers and tractors is Rs. 450/- whereas for three-wheelers, Rs. 500/- will be charged. Additionally, for light motor vehicles, passenger cars, medium commercial vehicles, heavy commercial vehicles, and trailers combination, the cost of HSRP is Rs. 745/-. However, the cost does not include GST charges.
Thus, anyone who still does not have a High-security registration plate should hurry before the end of March to avoid any fines.
