A boy next door who dreamt of living under the stars

I have always admired stars. In my childhood, I thought about what it would look like to live on the moon. I used to stay on the terrace most nights and sometimes even sleep there. But as I grew up, city life became polluted and noisy, and my stars started to fade away.

I wasn’t happy to see how the skies of Delhi were always polluted, and apart from the moon, there was nothing else visible in the sky to admire. I was in 10th standard when I decided I would not live in Delhi forever. I will shift to a city where pollution is a myth and a star-filled sky is the only reality.

When I got admission to a college, I made a few new friends who were passionate about traveling on bikes and exploring new places. They decided to visit Spiti valley one day and insisted I join them. I immediately said yes because I had heard that Milky Way is visible from there.

I don't have a bike of my own, and I had never traveled such a long distance on a bike, so one of my friends said I could sit behind his bike and travel with him. We started our journey, and within less than two days, we were in Spiti, India, the dream destination of many people but the reality of few.

It was almost nighttime, and I couldn't hold my excitement. When the stars came out, and it was completely dark, I started crying, looking at the sky. I couldn't believe what my eyes saw. The sky was so full of stars that it was difficult to locate the moon. I have never seen such a sight anywhere in my life. And it is impossible to see so many stars in the night sky in cities due to pollution.

We were there for two days, and I spent those two nights sleepless. I used to seep in the day and count stars at night, talk to them, click their pictures and curse my destiny for not giving this splendid view in cities. When I returned to Delhi, I decided to shift from Delhi and live in the countryside to enjoy such beautiful views every night.

I convinced my parents, which took time, but they ultimately allowed me to shift to Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, for two years. I decided to stay in Dharamshala because it was closer to places like Spiti, not too remote, and far from Delhi, so I could live there comfortably.
