An industrial township in Orissa, Rourkela is also known as the commercial capital of Orissa. This city has a huge iron and steel manufacturing base. One of the largest steel plants of the country, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is situated here.
As per 2001 census, the population of the city was 4,84,292. Sex Ratio during the same year was 835 females per 1000 males.
Due to oceanic influence, summers are very hot with temperature reaching maximum to 45 degree celcius and winters are cold. Monsoon Rainfall is during the period June to September. The climate is generally humid.
Rourkela is well connected to other parts of India by direct Trains. There is excellent communication facilities Calcutta, Bhubeneshwar, Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. It is also connected to Bhubeneshwar by air.

National Institute of Technology (NIT) also known as Regional Engineering College (REC), one of the premier national level institutions for technical education in the country, is situated in Rourkela. There is also a new technology university called the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) opened up in Rourkela. There are number of schools and colleges in Rourkela providing a good base for higher education. Rourkela is considered to be one of the most cosmopolitan cities of the country producing some of the best talents in the areas of medicine and technology.
