Known to the people by different names, Hyderabad is the capital of the state of Telangana in South India. It is situated on the on the banks of the Musi River. Hyderabad, along with Secunderabad, is called as “twin cities” located near Hussain Sagar Lake constituting a single magnificent metropolis. History of Hyderabad

Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana state in Andhra Pradesh, has a rich history attached to it. The city is renowned for its temples, monuments, bazaars and mosques all over India. Founded by the Qutb Shahi sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah of Golconda in 1591 CE, Hyderabad is constructed around the popular historical building of Charminar. The Hyderabad city was conquered by the first Nizam of Hyderabad during the MUghal rule in the year 1724. The Nizam made an alliance with the British and the territory came to be called as Hyderabad state, the biggest princely state in British India. During this time, Hyderabad witnessed great developments in terms of industries, railways, airports, and contemporary education. The city also became the trading center for pearls and diamonds.

The Indian Army annexed Hyderabad in 1948 after the country attained independence and commencing the Telangana movement. In 1956, Hyderabad was divided in the linguistics grounds, and it became the capital of Andhra Pradesh.

In 2014, Telangana became an independent state and Hyderabad became its capital.

Climate of Hyderabad

  • Hyderabad has a tropical dry and wet climate with an average annual temperature of 26.6 °C.
  • Summers (March to June) are generally hot and humid with a temperature of 30°C. The temperatures between April and June often exceed 40 °C.
  • May is the hottest month in Hyderabad, with temperatures between 26°C – 39 °C.
  • Winters are at its extreme in the months of December and January with the lowest temperature of 10 °C.
  • December is the coolest month in Hyderabad with temperatures between 14.5°C –28 °C.
  • Hyderabad receives heavy rains in the June and September from the south-west summer monsoon.

Economy of Hyderabad

The economy of Hyderabad mostly depends on tourism, traditional manufacturing, and education. The capital of Telangana is the largest contributor of state tax and GDP as compared to the other location in this state. In 2019, the GDP of Hyderabad was US$83.5 billion ranking this city on the position of fourth in India and 93rd across the globe. Moreover, Hyderabad has the largest number of special economic zones in India.

Demographics of Hyderabad

The population of Hyderabad in 2021 is estimated at around 10,268,653 with a growth rate of 2.64%, making it the 6th most populous urban agglomeration in the country.

According to the population census of 2011, Hyderabad has a population was 6,809,970 with a population density of 18,480/km2, making this city the fourth most populous city in India. The literacy rate was 83% higher than the national average of 74.04%.

Languages Spoken in Hyderabad: Urdu and Tamil are the official languages of Hyderabad. English stands at the second position in terms of the languages spoken here. The other languages of Hyderabad include Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Odia, Marwari, Malayali, Gujarati, Marathi, and Hindi.

Religions: Hindus and Muslims form a major majority in the city of Hyderabad. The people of other communities found here are Sikhs, Parsi, Buddhists, Christian, and Jain. The city has a good number of temples, mosques, and churches.

People in this city are majorly Urdu and Telugu speaking people with minority communities, including Kannada, Memon, Bengali, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Nawayathi, Uttar Pradeshi, Marwari, Odia, and Punjabi. There are several organizations in Hyderabad engaged in the promotion of literature, such as Sahitya Akademi, Telugu Academy, the Comparative Literature Association of India, the Urdu Academy, the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language, and the Andhra Saraswata Parishad. Hyderabad also has a public library known as the State Central Library that was established in 1891. The other libraries in this city are the British Library, the Sri Krishna Devaraya Andhra Bhasha Nilayam, and the Sundarayya Vignana Kendram.
  • Dance and music: Ever since the establishment of the Hyderabad city, people have been a huge fan of dance and poetry.   • Charminar – This popular tourist spot is open from Monday to Saturday between 9 am to 5 pm. It is closed on Fridays between 1pm to 2pm for prayers. The charges applicable here are –

  • Mecca Masjid: Located in the southwest side of the Charminar, Mecca Masjid is the oldest mosque in the city of Hyderabad. The construction of this mosque was begun by Muhammed Quli Qutub Shah in 1617 and was completed by Aurangzeb in 1694.
  • Falaknuma Palace: A popular piece of beautiful architecture, Falaknuma Palace is one of the most attractive places built by the Nizams. Exhibiting the amazing works of Florentine sculptors, this the palace is now converted into a hotel by the Taj group and no longer public space.
  • Chowmahalla Palace: Located near to the Charminar, Chowmahalla Palace is open from Saturday to Thursday from 10am to 5pm. This tourist spot is closed on National Holidays.
  • Golconda Fort: This tourist attraction in Hyderabad is open from 7am to 8pm. There is also a light and sound show that depicts the story of Golkonda.
  • Qutb Shahi Tombs – It is located within the radius of 1 km from the Golconda Fort. These tombs are open from 9:30am to 5:30pm on Saturdays to Thursdays. As it is built by the Qutubshahi dynasty, this historical building came to be known as Qutubshahi mosques in Hyderabad.
  • Qutub Shahi Tombs Site Museum: It is open from Saturday to Thursday from 9am to 4:30pm.
  • H.E.H The Nizam's Museum: It is open from Saturday to Thursday from 10am to 5pm.
  • Moula Ali Dargah: Built in the memory of Hazrat Ali, Moula Ali Dargah is a place of worship.
  • Purani Haveli: Located southeast of Afzalganj Bridge, Purani Haveli is open on Saturdays to Thursdays between 10:30am to 5pm.
  • Raymond Tomb: Situated near to Saroornagar, Raymond Tomb is made of black granite.
  • Salar Jung Museum: The museum is located in Naya Pul near Afzalgunj. The fees for visiting this museum are Rs 10 for Indians and Rs. 150 for foreigners.

Transportation Facilities in Hyderabad

Hyderabad has witnessed enormous developments in terms of public transportation facilities in recent years. You can get around this city using the following modes of transportation:

  • By metro: The Hyderabad Metro (HMR) is one of the most affordable, rapid, and clean modes of transport in the city. The cost of tickets ranges from Rs.10 to Rs.60. There are majorly three lines of metro –
    • Red Line – Begins at Miyapur in North Hyderabad and terminates at LB Nagar in East Hyderabad.
    • Blue Line - Begins at Raidurg at HITEC City and terminates at Nagole. This line connects West Hyderabad, Secunderabad, and East Hyderabad.
    • GreenLine – It starts at Jubilee Bus Station and terminates at the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS). This line connects Secunderabad and the Old City.

The interchanging stations are Parade Ground, Ameerpet, and MGBS.

  • By local trains (MMTS): One of the cheapest means of transportation in Hyderabad, Multi-Modal Transport System or local trains covers only a few locations in the city. People can buy daily, monthly, and quarterly passes to travel in these trains as well.
  • By bus: Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) runs local buses in Hyderabad. They begin at Mahatma Gandhi Bus Terminus (Imlibun). Not just local buses, you can also find private bus services such as Metro Express and Metro Deluxe.

The two major bus depots in Hyderabad are Dilsukhnagar Bus Depot and Koti Bus Depot.

  • By car: As the city has an underdeveloped road system, the 160-km-long Nehru Outer Ring Road expressway is one of the best means to travel across the city in a faster manner. The completely elevated P V Narasimha Rao Expressway connects the airport and South Hyderabad. The Inner Ring Road well-connects Central, South, and East Hyderabad.
  • By taxi: There are multiple taxi and cab services available in Hyderabad such as Ola, Uber, Avis, Yellow Cabs Hyderabad, Meru Cabs, Savaari, WiWiGo, Taxigk, White Cabs, Red Cabs, Green Cabs, Dot Cabs, and She Cab.

How to Reach in Hyderabad

  • By Plane: Hyderabad has a well-organized Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad with one integrated terminal and one Hajj terminal. The Nehru Outer Ring Road Expressway connects Hyderabad to the airport. The Pushpak - Airport Liner, an air-conditioned bus service of the government, connects to various parts of the city such as Secunderabad, BHEL, Miyapur, and Mahatma Gandhi Bus terminalnear Charminar. Sky cabs and Meru are the two metered cab services operated by the airport authority with charges of Rs. 20 per kilometre.
  • By Train: The city owns the headquarters of South Central Zone of the Indian Railways. The major three railway stations in Hyderabad are-
    • Hyderabad Station,
    • Kachiguda
    • Secunderabad Station

The destinations of these stations are some of the major cities in India, such as Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Trivandrum.

  • By car: NH-44 connects Hyderabad to other locations in India from North to South via road.
  • By bus: Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) operates buses in Telangana and connects Maharashtra, Odisha, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh to Hyderabad.
