When anyone plans a move from their current home to the new one, their work starts much before they actually think.
Before you start packing your stuff or preparing a to-do-list when you move into your new house, you should also give priority to notifying the necessary service providers and authorities about your shifting.
People usually leave such important tasks post relocation and delay significant processes in a rush. It is mandatory that your new address gets updated on the essential documents and service portals so that you can continue enjoying their services and avail benefits even at your new home.
So, here we have brought compiled information about all the authorities, service providers, and people you should inform about your move. You will also find detailed procedures for change of address in all your essential documents so that no statutory or paperwork gets delayed after you shift. 1. Change of address in Voter ID card
As Voter ID is the ultimate proof of your Indian citizenship, you should get your personal details such as your new address updated before or after you have finally moved into your new home. Here are a few things that you should know when you are moving.
- Visit this URL – www.nvsp.in to make changes in the Voter ID online.
- Fill form 8 for any change in the details such as name, address, state, constituency, age, date of birth, EPIC number, gender, etc.
- If you are shifting to a new location in the same constituency, then you should fill Form 8A.
- People shifting from one constituency to the other are required to fill Form 6.
You are required to submit some supporting documents such as proof of address, photographs, and proof of age. Submit the required form online. Keep a copy of the application receipt with you.
2. Change of address in Aadhaar Card
Aadhaar card is another important ID proof for the Indian citizens considered valid by almost all the private as well as government services. This ID is based on the biometric and demographic information of a person. When you need to update your new address in your Aadhaar card online, there are two different ways:
Offline – Visiting your nearest permanent enrolment center. Click on “Locate Enrolment Center” on uidai.gov.in.
Online – Update on Self Service Update Portal (SSUP) clicking on “Update Aadhaar Details (Online)” on uidai.gov.in.
As most of the people prefer to change their address online, here is a step by step guide:
Step 1: Visit the website – https://ssup.uidai.gov.in/ssup/
Step 2: Click on “Login”.
Step 3: Enter your Aadhaar number.
Step 4: Enter captcha code and click “Send OTP”.
Step 5: After you receive OTP on your registered mobile number, enter it to login successfully to your Aadhaar account.
Step 6: Click on “Update Aadhaar Online” in services to update your name, address, age, date of birth, gender, and language on your Aadhaar card.
Step 7: Click on “Proceed to Update Aadhaar”.
Step 8: Select the details to be updated in your Aadhaar card and click on “Proceed to Update Aadhaar”. There is a limitation on the attempts for Aadhaar updation/correction.
Step 9: Upload scanned copies of the required documents.
Step 10: Have a look at the preview of the newly updated details and make the payment of Rs. 50 online using net banking or debit/credit card.
Once the payment is made, the Update Request Number (URN) gets generated to check the status of the Aadhaar updation. The process of Aadhaar update takes a week to complete. After the update has been made, you can now download the new version of your Aadhaar card.
3. Change of address in post office
It is important to get your new address updated with your post office so that you can get your documents, money orders and posts on time. For this, you need to write a formal request letter addressing the post office for the change of address. In this letter, you should mention your current as well as the new address.
4. Change of address in PAN card
A PAN card is one of the significant identity proofs required by an individual during financial transactions such as opening a bank account, doing a high value financial transaction, and insurance services. The procedure to update new address in your PAN card is as follows:
Through your Aadhaar card:
- To avail this facility, you should first update your new address in your Aadhaar card.
- Enter the URL – https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/endUserAddressUpdate.html
- Enter your PAN number, Aadhaar number, email ID, and your registered mobile number in Aadhaar for OTP to get Aadhaar Based e-KYC.
- After the generation of Aadhaar Based e-KYC, the new updated address in your Aadhaar will be updated in the PAN database of Income Tax Department.
- You will receive a mail from the authority on your registered mobile number and email ID.
Application of change of address in PAN card on NSDL:
- Visit the website of NSDL.
- Click on the option of ‘Select the Category of the Applicant’ at the bottom of the page.
- Choose the right category (individual/BOI/AOP/Partnership firm) and then click “Select”.
- Fill the details such as name, gender, father’s name, age, date of birth, etc.
- Select the field in which you want to make a change.
- Enter your PAN number in the appropriate field.
There are two ways to make a change:
1. Paperless PAN application – Select “Yes” in the option of ‘For Paperless PAN Application’ and upload your documents, photographs, and signatures online.
2. Traditional route – Select “No” in the option of ‘For Paperless PAN Application’. You will receive a PAN acknowledgement form with a 16-digit Acknowledgement Number.
- Take a hard copy of this form and fill your details.
- Attach two passport size photographs and add your signatures.
- Enclose a demand draft or a cheque with the acknowledgement form and self-attested documents like proof of PAN, proof of address, proof of identity, proof of date of birth.
- Mention the 16-digit Acknowledgement Number on the back of your demand draft or a cheque.
- Put everything in the envelope and write “Application for PAN CHANGE REQUEST – Acknowledgment Number” on it.
- Post this envelope to NSDL at Income Tax PAN Services Unit, NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited, 5th Floor, Mantri Sterling, Plot No.341, Survey No.997/8, Model Colony, Near Deep Bungalow Chowk, Pune – 411016.
- The envelope should reach the NSDL office in 15 days from the date of acknowledgment.
- NSDL will send an intimation on your registered mail ID receiving your application.
5. Change of address in banks
When you plan a permanent move from your old home to the new one, you should promptly inform your bank about it. There are two ways of getting your new address updated with your bank – online and offline. Under the online method for change in the address details, you can use an internet banking app or net banking to update your new address with the bank. If you choose an offline method to update your new address with the bank, you can submit your written request with your KYC documents. Some banks even ask you to fill up a form and attach your ID proofs. The usual time for the completion of this procedure is 7-10 working days.
6. Change address in driving license
People moving from one place of residence to the other are required to change their address in the driving license. It is mandatory to update the new address of the registered owner of the vehicle in this proof of identity and address. For this, you need to make an application within 14 days of address change in Form 33 to record change in residence and make payment of a fee. There are certain supporting documents that are required along with Form 33 such as:
- Proof of new address
- Certificate of registration (RC)
- Pollution certificate
- Insurance certificate
7. Change of address in insurance policy
Every insurance company has a different procedure to make any changes in the particulars of their customers such as their address. When you notify your insurance company about your new address, they can easily get in touch with you or send documents at your desired address.
8. Address change in telephone connection
When you have a postpaid or landline connection at your current place, it is essential that you inform your telephone service provider about your new place of residence. After you intimate your address change, the company will provide you a new connection at your new home.
9. Address change in internet connection
People using a broadband internet connection should inform their internet service provider at least a week before their move for its disconnection and reconnection. If your internet service provider provides services at the location of your new home, you can get your broadband transferred to your new home. But this is only possible when you move in the same city. When an individual moves to a different city, it is advised that he should contact his ISP and check whether they are serviceable in your new location.
10. Address change in cable connection
Getting your new address notified with the cable TV company is the next step. Most of the DTH companies are serviceable across India and even if you are moving to another city, you can get your cable TV connection shifted to your new address. For this, you just have to inform the cable service provider about the moving date and you are all sorted.
11. Address updation with water and electricity utility companies
Water and electricity is counted amongst the two most basic necessities in a household. So, as soon as you decide on a moving date, you should inform both the utility companies about your new address and the date of relocation. After you have notified them, the professionals of the companies will visit your place on the moving day and disconnect the connections and prepare for the reconnection at your new residence. The information about your relocation date should be given to the utility companies at least a week in advance so that they arrange a final meter reading at your current place for the final billing.
As far as the procedure for the change of address is concerned, every utility company follows a different one. The basic process involves a form and some supporting documents like your latest electricity and water bill, receipt of the bill payment, and copy of the ID proof of your new address.
12. Changing address with gas agency
The three popular gas agencies or LPG suppliers – Bharat Petroleum, Indian Oil, and HP allow their customers to transfer their gas connection to the place where they are relocating. Since these companies are operational across India, it is easy to get your gas connection transferred to your new address. The procedure is as follows:
- Find a gas agency in your new location on the website of the gas company. There is a detailed list of gas distributors available there from which you can make a selection.
- Take the original and the photocopies of the following documents to your current gas distributer for submission:
- Application requesting transfer ( Ensure to mention current address, customer number
- Proof of address
- Proof of identity
- Gas regulator
- Gas book
- Gas connection voucher
- If yours is an intercity relocation, you have to surrender your cylinder and safety regulator.
- The gas distributor will return your security deposit.
- He will give you a gas transfer voucher. Make sure you check every detail in it.
- Once you get your address proof of your new home, submit it with the new gas agency along with ID proof and gas transfer voucher.
- Make payment of the transfer fee to the new gas agency.
- Once you submit the documents and make the fee payment, you will be allotted a new gas connection on your new address.
13. Schools
When you have school-going children, it is compulsory to inform the school about your move. Check with school authorities about their branch at your new location. If you are admitting your kids to a new school nearby to your new place, then you should ask for a school leaving certificate of migration certificate from the current school for the purpose of admission.
14. Mutual funds
You should start the process of address change in your mutual funds details by updating your KYC information in the “Change in KYC form” downloaded from the https://camskra.com/ and send it to your AMC branch or distributor. CAMSKRA is a nodal mutual funds agency. Submit the copy of your PAN card and address proof for verification purposes. The usual time taken for the completion of this procedure is somewhere around 10 days. The CAMS offers a single-window administration regarding the change of address by investors. The portal will automatically update your residence information and along with the details of your entire invested funds.
15. Provident fund
When you are shifting to another city or state, it is important that you get your new residence address updated on the EPF portal. Follow these simple steps for the address updation:
- Visit – https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
- Login with your UAN number and password.
- Click on “View”, then “Profile details”.
- Under “profile details: section, click on the permanent address option.
- Now click on the pencil icon beside the permanent address.
- Edit the details of your permanent address and save it.
- It will get updated in EPFO records.
Other people/service providers to inform about the change of your residence
